Public health dentistry is one of the nine specialties of Dentistry. It is a modern concept of human development in science, although it has its roots in antiquity. Dental public health is involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the dental health of populations rather than individuals and is concerned primarily with prevention of oral disease. The goals of the speciality is to identify and measure the oral health problems and needs of the community, to identify means by which these needs can be best met within the constraints of resources. The dental public health professionals work to promote oral health through education, research, prevention and control of dental diseases.
The Department of Public Health Dentistry is highly integrated in terms of educational objectives, research activities, and patient care with extremely dedicated faculty of the department working together to achieve these goals. The educational program in the Department of Public Health Dentistry mainly focuses on developing the dental student's skill and knowledge about the welfare of the community regarding their oral health. The students are educated about oral hygiene practices, brushing techniques, various types of indices and to motivate the patients about their oral health by giving health talks. Regular dental check-up and treatment camps are conducted by the department. A well-equipped mobile dental van facility is available for poor and rural people. Toothpastes and toothbrushes are supplied to the patients free of cost and referral cards are also given to the patients for free treatment in the college. The department is actively involved in the research programs and publications in various national and international journals representing the keen interest of the department in expansion of the breadth and depth of public health dentistry.
