Periodontology is a specialty of dentistry which encompasses prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes, such as dental implants.
The Department came into existence in 1991 with the establishment of The Syamala Reddy Dental College, Bangalore. The Department offers graduate programme(BDS) and three-year postgraduate programme leading to a Master of Dental Surgery degree. The advanced training programme in conservative dentistry and endodontics is approved and accredited by the Dental Council of India.
The Department offers a graduate (B.D.S.) and postgraduate (M.D.S.). The advanced training program in Periodontology is approved by the Dental Council of India.
The department has separate undergarduate and postgraduate section with all latest facilities such as lasers, peizosurgery, microsurgical instruments, Florida probe, Periotron 8000, BANA processor and Implant kit with physiodispenser.
Periodontics is that branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and condition affecting supporting structures of tooth and their implant substitutes. The specialty has been making rapid strides recently by involving the advancements like Lasers, piezo-surgery and Micro-surgery etc. in achieving its goal.
Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums which gradually destroy the supporting structures of natural teeth. Dental plaque which is a complex of bacterial species is the primary cause of gum disease in susceptible individuals. Evidence has indicated that periodontal diseases might affect the overall systemic health of the individual.
